Integrating Model Attitudes and Appearance Geared for Excellence
The world around us changes everyday. Cultures, traditions, trends, and fads change with the times. Our members are also trend setters in fashion, music, art, and culture. However, no matter how the world may change, the fundamental principles embodied in our Nine Cardinal Virtues and the Delta Oath are what guide us as women of Delta Sigma Theta.
So what exactly is the problem?
As our ranks have increased and grown, some members have a difficult time understanding and upholding the values of the Sorority. There is confusion, especially in our collegiate chapters, about what is appropriate to do in the name of Delta Sigma Theta. Chapters and members are not presenting a public image of the Sorority that is in line with our Constitution and Bylaws, Code of Ethics or Code of Conduct. Some examples include:
- New initiates dressed in army fatigue, disrespecting other organizations, and using obscenities in their New Initiate Presentation.
- Chapter programs that contain strong sexual content.
- Members, identified as members of Delta Sigma Theta, with photos of sexual conduct, underage alcohol abuse, and hazing on their personal websites.
What’s our solution?
A clear set of values that consider the changing times should be developed. Members should be educated on these values and the expectations of the Sorority during and after the membership intake process. More importantly, members should be held accountable for upholding the values.
I.M.A.A.G.E. is designed to education members on the values of the Sorority. I.M.A.A.G.E. focuses on both collegiate and alumnae members.
What have we done so far?
The collegiate leadership has already hosted a Retreat at each of the five state meetings that was for collegiates only. The Retreats consisted of facilitation of open dialogue on the following topics:- Websites and electronic networking platforms, such as Facebook and mySpace
- New Initiate Presentation (NIP) (Regional Rep will randomly attend NIPs to monitor compliance.)
- Focus on Delta, not just your chapter
- Appropriate information to present
- Inappropriate information
- Addressing other Greek lettered organizations
- Attire
- Parties and Social Functions
- Alcohol and drug abuse
- Advertisement
- Risk management
